Whitelee represents a total lifetime investment of £1.5billion by ScottishPower Renewables. Over 4000 fulltime equivalent jobs were created during peak years of construction and the wind farm now supports around 600 jobs every year through operations and maintenance.
Whitelee has generated over 8600GWh of electricity to date, saving over 5 million tonnes of emissions. A single revolution of the blades of a Whitelee turbine produces enough energy to charge 300 mobile phones.
The Control Centre at Whitelee Wind Farm is a renewable energy hub, with just under 40 wind farms (and 1150 wind turbines) monitored and controlled there.
Whitelee is a fantastic example of how a renewable energy site can become a eco-tourist attraction! The wind farm is popular with both locals and tourists and their visitor centre has welcomed more than 750,000 people.
Visitors can learn all about renewable energy at the visitor centre, with interactive exhibitions fit for all the family. There are also 130km of trails around the wind farm, where walkers, cyclists and horse riders can experience the awe of the turbines first-hand.
